See Highlights Of SERAP’s Report On Corruption In Electricity Sector

The common man in Nigeria has been paying the price for corruption in the electricity sector, the Socio-Economic Right And Accountability Project (SERAP) said on Tuesday.

The Socio-Economic Right And Accountability Project (SERAP) said on Tuesday that Nigerians have continued to pay the ultimate price – staying in darkness, but still made to pay crazy electricity bills.

This SERAP’s statement is part of its findings that will be made public soon when it releases a report that focuses on the level of corruption in Nigeria’s power sector.

The report will make bare the total estimated financial loss to Nigeria from corruption in the electricity sector and the price that Nigerians have paid.

Part of this price that have been paid by Nigerians is seen in a cartoon which was shared by the group, as it tweets major issues emphasised in the report.

Five major highlights of the report expected soon were released by the group on its Twitter handle.

1. The report details the power sector privatisation scandal & highlights various outstanding cases of corruption in the sector.

2. These scandals are the 3 billion Naira alleged scam by former Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s Commissioners; 5.2 billion Naira of the Rural Electrification Agency’s fund allegedly misappropriated by former Senate Committee Chairman on Power; the case of the Ramsome Owan-led NERC.

The AEDC Recruitment Scandal/Jumbo Pay Scandal; the Elumelu report on the Rural Electrification scandal. etc.

1. At the launch, the report will reveal the total amount of public funds allegedly stolen in the power sector since 1999.

2. The report will also make several recommendations to the federal and state governments, foreign governments and donor agencies, demanding that they should insist on prosecution of suspected perpetrators of corruption and recovery of stolen public funds.

3. The report will be presented by Yemi Oke, Associate Professor, Energy/Electricity Law, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos.
