2019: Rights activist berates Buhari over reelection bid

A Human right Activist, Comrade Morris Alagoa, has asked President Muhammadu Buhari, to shun his 2019 re- election bid and rather focus on the implementation of 2015 campaign promises.

Alagoa, who criticised President Buhari’s administration , said ordinarily, considering the health of Buhari, the demand of the office of President of Nigeria and failed promises to get the economy working; it would have been fine if the All Progressive Congress shops for another promising Nigerian to run for Presidency.

In a press statement, signed and sent via email to DailyTimes at the weekend, the Activist pointed out that while President Buhari has the right to seek re-election and the electorate has their choice, he is just shocked and surprised that the likes of Julius Nyerere of Tanzania and Nelson Mandela of South- Africa are scarce; despite the good examples they left behind.

He furthermore said most African leaders are driven by greed and the paraphernalia to walk on the sit-tight path and; some even prefer dying in office.

He berated the President for failing to aggressively address the issue of lingering scarcity of Petroleum products nation wide, adding that Boko haram has not been defeated and herdsmen have added to the killings associated with the Fulanis’.

“The Dollar which Buhari promised he would bring to appreciable measuring levels with the Naira has proven to be another failed promise; Unemployment has not been addressed, the Nigerian roads are in very bad shape, including the Road to access Abuja from the South.

While it is true that there is head-on fight against corruption; it is most unfortunate that the anti-graft war is observed by many to be skewed; against perceived opponents.

Most of us support the fight against corruption; but unless the fight takes on a holistic hue; it will lose the support and goodwill.

“What it did on Ogoni Cleanup is just a build up on what the previous administration did, the regulatory agencies are still incapacitated by poor funding and so; the Niger Delta environment still remain highly polluted by oil industry operations and no cleanups”

The oil companies are sailing with impunity and, even have the effrontery to order the military against some of us who are going about our legitimate tasks.

The issue of security is very serious and how responsibility and blame is shifted from the local government to State and State Government to the Federal Government is appalling. Our political leaders, from Local Government Chairmen to Governors and President should rise up and take responsibility and stop transferring blame.

The security of lives and property of citizens and their happiness is the first responsibility of all legitimate governments all over the world.

But, what we see in Nigeria is as if only the sources of revenue to government, such as Crude oil and gas are important and the lives and property of citizens are no longer important.

As far as the killings by herdsmen, Boko Haram and alleged cultists are concerned; government’s reaction has shown shirking of responsibility.

Nigerians are yet to see any innovation in security arrangement; with effective strategies to tackle and contain those who take the laws into their hands and making the sanctity of human life no longer respected.
