20 days in office: Council boss flags-off multiple rural road projects in Nsukka

The growth of any economy rests on the development of humans, infrastructure and agriculture. Little wonder just in 20 days in office, Chief Patrick Asadu, Chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area of Enugu state swiftly moved to flag-off construction of some rural roads to allow easy movement of agricultural products in the area.

Omeje, who was sworn in as executive chairman of Nsukka Local Government Area on the 4th of December had while assuming office promised that his administration will aggressively develop the council area.

The chairman while recently performing the flag off at one of the road project sites said the projects would be completed by the first quarter of 2018.

“We promised during our campaign to carryout road constructions, we are here to fulfil that promise. It is clear that we have come to do things differently from the way our predecessors did theirs.

“We will stop at nothing at ensuring that our people are happy”, he said.

He noted that the council would move to other parts of Nsukka after completing the ongoing projects.

“We have other projects to be done in the eastern and southern parts of Nsukka council area; we are focusing in the central and by mid January when we must have completed the roads. We will then move to other zones”, he said.

In an interview with newsmen, Omeje said the project was a private partnership arrangements.

“The arrangements were made possible because of the confidence the people has for this administration.

“The trust of the people in this administration made the contractors to move to site even without receiving mobilization fee from the council”, he added.

The roads awarded for construction included: A 12.6 km Edem ring road, 9km Lejja linking Aku, Akpugo Eze in Nkanu, Aku in Igbo- Etiti local government area and Ede Oballa community, Umukashi, Echera Saint Theresa, Tectonics road and 10 km Nru, Ede Oballa, Eha Alumona, Eha Ndiagu road.

In a reaction, a stakeholder in the area, Engr. Edwin Ajibo who spoke on behalf of the community said had remained in disrepair for decades while successive administrations pay no attention until the present administration of Chief Omeje who within 20 days of his assumption of office came to our rescue.

At various communities visited there was jubilation and shouts of praises for the council chairman whom they all refer to as Okaigbo.

Ajibo noted that Edem community has the largest population in the council and have suffered untold hardship.

“The chairman of the council has proved that he came ameliorate the sufferings of his people”, he said.

Also at Lejja Community, Hon. Enerst Ogwo said the area lacked accessible road since after the civil war.

He said that the arrival of Patrick Omeje ( Okai n’ Igbo of Nsukka) would remain indelible in the minds of the community for the evergreen project in the annals of history of the council.

Equally, the Town Union President of Nru autonomous community Chief Donatus Chiweaku said the community would remain grateful to the council chairman for deeming it fit to consider rehabilitating their road.

‎The shouts of Okaigbo however rented the air at Ibagwa Ani/ Okpaligbo as top politicians among who are Dr. Uche Ogbu, Chief Chidi Obetta M/D CEO Jerry Mariot Hotels both governorship aspirants among others.

They all expressed surprise that a chairman who has not received allocation could be seen fulfilling his promise just under three weeks he assumed office as chairman.
