2 fatally injured, 37 rescued, in Abuja building collapse

A two Storey plaza at Lagos Street, Garki Village area of Garki District, Abuja, yesterday night collapsed, leaving two people fatally injured with 37 people rescued from the rubble.
The two storey building, which served both residential and commercial purposes, collapsed on Wednesday night.
Confirming the unfortunate incident to journalists in Abuja, the Director General of Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Dr Abbass Iddriss said thirty Seven person have so far been rescued at the scene of the collapsed structure, even as the rescue mission is still ongoing.
The FEMA helmsman said the affected persons have been evacuated to various medical facilities in Abuja.
According to the DG, “37 persons have so far been rescued and evacuated to Hospital, others reportedly still trapped.
“Rescue team and others are on ground. Rescue operations on but slowly due to ongoing rain.
“They are making frantic efforts at getting an excavator to remove people from the rubble.” He added.
The DG commended the efforts of all stakeholders working hard manually to rescue trapped persons, including members of the community.
He revealed that the rescue mission is ongoing as they await the arrival of equipment to enhance the operations.

“Meanwhile, the FEMA Search and Rescue team is awaiting excavators to intensify the search to ensure that no victim is left in the rubble of the collapsed building.”
A combined team of the FCT Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), FCT Police Command, and the officials of the Department of Road Transport Service (DRTS) popularly known as VIO were on ground to carryout the rescue efforts.
