Youth Empowerment in Agriculture: IITA’s Model Sparks Hope for Nigeria’s Future
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is making waves in the agricultural sector with its youth-focused initiatives, equipping young Nigerians with the skills and knowledge to drive the country’s next green revolution.
The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, recently visited IITA’s research and demonstration farms, where he witnessed firsthand the impressive work being done to empower young people in agriculture.
From mastering agribusiness and innovation to learning climate-smart techniques, Nigerian youth are being equipped to lead Africa’s agricultural transformation.
”I saw today aligns perfectly with our conviction at the Federal Ministry of Youth Development: agriculture is not ‘old-fashioned work’, but a modern opportunity space where technology, entrepreneurship, and sustainability converge,” Olawande said.
The IITA model is a testament to the power of agriculture to drive jobs and national growth, and it’s inspiring to see young people at the forefront of this movement.
Olawande has been praised for his efforts in supporting Nigerian youth, with initiatives such as the National Youth Employability Action Plan, Digital Literacy Training, and the Nigerian Youth Investment Fund.
He has also launched the Nigerian Youth Academy, a digital learning platform aimed at equipping millions of young Nigerians with vocational and digital skills
President Bola Tinubu has demonstrated a commitment to youth development, with policies like the Nigerian Education Loan Fund and the Three Million Technical Talent initiative.
Olawande commended President Tinubu for his support of Nigerian youth, saying his administration has provided a framework for youth empowerment.
The Minister’s efforts have been recognized by youths, who describe him as an asset to President Tinubu’s administration
