Yoruba group demands special status for Lagos

A Pan-Yoruba Socio-cultural Group, Yoruba KO’YA Movement, has presented a 10-page policy paper on the restructuring of Nigeria’s political, economic and social structures to the Speaker of Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.
The group also used the opportunity of the meeting to also call on the Federal Government to grant special status to Lagos State, not just because of its former capital status, but also because of its economic importance to the country.
Addressing newsmen, the National Organising Secretary of the movement, Comrade Maxwell Adeleye said: “Every conscious and passionate Nigerian should join the call for the restructuring of Nigeria.
“The Lagos Ibadan expressway has long been abandoned, but we were told last week that N80billion has been approved for the construction work to resume all because another election is fast approaching.
“According to the National Bureau of Statistics, Lagos State contributes 57 percent of the total Value Added Tax (VAT) accrued to the federation account in the year 2016 but today, the entire trunk A roads in Lagos are blot on the landscape crying for the attention of Abuja.
“Lagos money is being used to develop states contributing nothing to the economy of the country. We say enough is enough. We demand a special status for Lagos State.”
