World Kidney Day: Government Sledge Hammer For Gall On Unregistered Alternative Medicine Practitioners

 

As the world celebrate World kidney Day in remembrance of people suffering from kidney failure across the globe, the national president of National Complementary and Alternative Medicine Association (NACAMA), Prof. Peter Katchy has warned those parading themselves as alternative medical practitioners without formal training to desist as the Anambra state Government has set- up a committee to look into the activities of conventional and alternative medical practitioners with the aim of sanitizing the health sector.

The warning was given at the weekend during a press briefing organised by the National President of NACAMA, Prof. Katchy to mark World Kidney Day.

Dr. Katchy stated that the state commissioner of Health, Dr. Joe Akabuike with the approval of the state governor, Chief Willie Obiano has set up a committee to look into the activities of various practitioners in the Health sector.

He disclosed that some of the trained ailment such as renal failure was as a result of the activities of some untrained herbal medicine practitioners who claim to be experts in the field of alternative medicine, thereby endangering patient’s lives through their concoctions.

NACAMA president expressed dismay at the rising level of alternative medicine practitioners whose activities had remained unchecked until the advent of Gov. Obiano’s administration.

Prof. Katchy emphasised on the dangers inherent in taking unprescribed medicine as it poses danger to the functions of human kidney.

He advised that quality standard must be observed by health institutions so as not to endanger people’s lives in the name of diagnosis or treatment of patients, adding that his organisation, NACAMA has been in touch with some investors to establish kidney dialysis centre in Onitsha, Anambra state to reduce the rush of Nigerians to abroad for treatment of kidney diseases.
