Wike Insists Kingibe Won’t Return to Senate, Defends Polling Unit Visits
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has reiterated that Senator Ireti Kingibe will not return to the Senate in 2027, linking his prediction to project delivery and grassroots presence.
Kingibe, who represents the FCT in the Senate, was elected in 2023 on the platform of the Labour Party. In 2024, Wike had vowed that she would not be re-elected.
The senator had earlier accused the minister of failing to respond to her letters and messages amid rising insecurity in Abuja. She also alleged that he lacked a genuine interest in the FCT, citing challenges such as water scarcity and other infrastructure deficits affecting residents.
Speaking at a media parley in Abuja, Wike maintained that his comments were based on performance.
“I said it more than one year ago, Senator Ireti, you won’t come back as a senator. That’s why you don’t like people who tell you the truth. It’s bitter. Let her show one project,” he said.
He further claimed that the senator had not been visible in satellite communities where many voters reside.
On his recent visits to polling units during the FCT area council elections, Wike dismissed criticisms from opposition parties, insisting he acted within his rights as the territory’s chief security officer.
“I’m the governor of the FCT. For security reasons, I have to find out what’s going on. I don’t need to be told. I wasn’t a candidate in the election,” he said.
Wike added that he visited about 10 polling units and denied influencing the outcome of the election.
He also rejected comparisons with past FCT ministers.
“What’s my business? You said previous ministers never bothered about development. So, because they didn’t pursue development, I should also refuse to do so?” he asked.
