We’ve revitalised 55 Primary Health Care facilities across the country – Shuaib

***Says the agency effectively curb cholera outbreak in the North
*** Reiterates NPHCDA commitment to do more in 2018

The Executive Director of the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, NPHCDA, Dr Faisal Shuaib, has said that about 55 Primary Health Care facilities have been revived under the agency revitalisation scheme.

The NPHCDA, which was set up in 1992 to extend healthcare delivery services to the rural areas, has solved more than 70 percent of the nation’s health care problem by collaborating with the rest of the health system.

Speaking during its end of the year Program Review Meeting with staff, management and zonal directors of the agency, Shaiub noted that beyond revitalisation of PHC facilities, NPHCDA was working with key stakeholders to review the general system of managing PHC centres across the country.

While noting that Community Health Influencers, promoters and service activities is currently ongoing, Shuaib said that the agency’s goal is to change the image and culture of work at NPHCDA by ensuring proper accountability, strengthening of routine immunisation and the supply chain.

Shuaib also outlined the achievements recorded by the agency in the last one year, saying that “the NPHCDA effectively combated cholera outbreak in Borno as well as Cerebral Spinal Meningitis outbreak in Zamfara State.

“Rebranded immunisation activities with increase advocacy and linkage with stakeholders and end users. Successfully mounted of yellow fever outbreak response in Kwara and Kogi states.

“Successful completion of 7 polio campaigns ( 2NIDD and 5SNIDs) covering polio high risk States and Southern States” he added.

While reaffirming the commitment of the agency to do more in the coming year, Shuaib said the agency is doing all it could to ensure that the PHC system in Nigeria which was according to him was still sub-optimal meet up with the required standard.

” The new year present each of us with the opportunity to make a difference. If we are going to change the immunisation coverage levels, reverse the poor indices for maternal and child health, and overhaul the health care system, we must continue at the pace that we have begun.

“We need to make our meetings, workshops, trainings and fields activities more purposeful, efficient and effective.

This can only happen if we engage in our work with the right attitude and interests. We must be willing to be held accountable for whatever is committed to us.

Officials of the agency who attained retirment age were also awarded with various categories of awards during the event.
