We’re celebrating Easter with caution, declare Gombe Christians

Christians in Gombe state say they are celebrating this year’s Easter with caution as a result of the coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Some of them who spoke in Gombe on Sunday, said the celebration would be done in compliance with government’s directive.
Mrs. Comfort Godfrey of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Glorious Shepherd Parish, said Easter celebration this year was different from the ones of the past.
“We are enjoying the Easter, but with serious caution because of the coronavirus. No matter what is on ground, we will celebrate but safely,” she said.
Godfrey added that many worshippers were now staying at home because of the virus, adding “we were not up to 20 in our church today and we stayed quite a distance from each other.”
Mr. Bright Jacob of the same parish said with the massive awareness on the danger of the pandemic, he was now more careful than before and would not visit anyone until the coast is clear.
“Jesus is the reason for our celebration and the same Bible says we should obey authorities. If government says stay at home, we will remain home to stay safe.
“Even in our church, we are observing social distancing and are not even up to 20. We just have to celebrate with caution to be alive to celebrate more in the future,” he said.
Jacob appealed to government to help the poor cushion the effects of the pandemic, adding that “if you have, please share with others. This is a time to give and not to keep.”
Ms Rebecca Bulus of the Evangelical Church Winning All (ECWA), Nasarawo, said Jesus remained the focal point of Easter celebration, hence the need to celebrate in love and obedience.
“No matter the situation or restriction, I will continue to praise and celebrate in my heart to God.

“Coronavirus may stop us from the usual celebration but cannot stop us from giving thanks to God individually,” he added.
Bulus called on Christians in Gombe state to continue to pray for God’s intervention, while supporting the government and health authorities through compliance, adding “this virus is real and we must join hands to fight it.”
A visit to some churches shiwed that the directive on social distancing was being complied with, while worshippers were not up to 40 in most churches visited.
Many worshippers were seen carrying hand sanitizer while few wore their face masks.
However, some worshippers shook hands occasionally to greet one another.
