WAEC withholds over 9,000 candidates’ results for exam malpractices

About 9,457 candidates who participated in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for Private Candidates, 2019-Second Series and were reported to have been involved in one form of examination malpractice or the other would have their results withheld by the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC)

.This was disclosed  by the Head of Nigeria National Office of WAEC, Mr Olu Adenipekun, at a press briefing to announce the release of the results on Friday, at the WAEC National office, Yaba, Lagos.According to him, this number represents 9.74% of the total candidature for the examination adding that their cases will be presented to the appropriate Committee of Council and the decision of the Council on their cases will be communicated to the affected candidates within the shortest possible time.

 Announcing the release of the results, Adenipekun said a total of 97,080 candidates registered for the examination in Nigeria, out of which 94,884 candidates sat the examination. “I also wish to report that a total of 110 candidates with varying degrees of special needs registered for the examination. Out of this number, 38 were visually challenged; 15 had impaired hearing; 12 had low vision; three were spastic cum mentally challenged, and eight were physically challenged””All these candidates with special needs were adequately provided for in the administration of the examination.

The results of these candidates have been fully processed and released along with those of other candidates.”, he said. The Head of National office disclosed further that of the total number of candidates that sat the examination in Nigeria, 47,237 were male while 47,647 were female, representing 49.78% and 50.22% respectively.Giving the breakdown of the results,  Adenipekun said out of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, 91,225 candidates, representing 96.14% have their results fully processed and released while 3,659 candidates representing 3.86% have a few of their subjects still being processed.He said such results will however be speedily processed and released within the next one week. 

 The analysis of the statistics of the performance of candidates shows that out of the 94,884 candidates that sat the examination: 49,679  candidates representing 52.36% obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects with or without English Language and/or Mathematics; out of which 24,354 were male and 25,325 were female representing 49.02% and 50.98% respectively;Also 33,304 candidates representing 35.10% obtained credits and above in minimum of five  subjects including English Language and Mathematics; 16, 431 were male and 16, 873 were female representing 49.34% and 50.66% respectively.Adenipekun called on candidates who sat the examination to check the details of their performance on the Council’s results website: www.waecdirect.org.  “The Result Checker PIN and Serial Number needed by candidates to check their results online are contained on the candidate’s Smart Identity Card used during the conduct of the examination.” he said. He also announced to the public that the Council in Nigeria has perfected its Electronic Certificate Management System, an online portal being deployed to enable private candidates request for their certificates online. “Therefore, beginning with the WASSCE for Private Candidates, 2019-Second Series, the collection of certificates would be based on requests by candidates online via the Electronic Certificate Management System platform. ” he said.
