WAEC to Adopt CBT Technology

The West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) has disclosed readiness to toe the line of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) by adopting the Computer Based Tests (CBT) method.

According to the WAEC’s Board Registrar, Dr. Iyi Uwadae, the board plans to introduce the technology into its examination across the West African sub region.

Speaking at the Board’s 20th annual endowment fund lecture in its Ikeja, Lagos, international office,

Uwadae said: “WAEC is ready to adopt the technology based method in conducting its examination across West African Countries. The Board’s new international office in Lagos is already equipped with internet facilities and can sit over 350 candidates at once”.

Uwadae disclosed that WAEC’s Ikeja office was used by JAMB for the recently-conducted UTME examination.

Of concern is the unique system of WAEC’s examination being theoretical in nature, compared to the UTME’s objective questions.

The Registrar however, was very prompt to dismiss this as a non-issue. His words: “The fact that the WAEC exams are theoretical will not stand as a major challenge in adopting the CBT, though, our Board will not in a rush to adopting this CBT method.”
