Four days to the much expected gubernatorial and House of Assembly election in Oyo State, the Social Democratic Party (SDP)governorship candidate in the state, Seyi Makinde has charged the people of the state to vote for personality and not political party as it was done during the last election.
Makinde, who recalled that the results of the Presidential/National Assembly election held in the state penultimate Saturday in which the All Progressives Congress (APC) cleared the three senatorial and 12 of the 14 House of Representatives’ seats did not reflect the strength of each of the five major political parties in the state and called on the electorate to avoid the ‘mistake’ made then.
Asking the people to separate personalities from the political parties, he said the rumoured visit of the President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari to the state before the election should not be allowed to hoodwink the people, saying, “the President-elect will be President of Nigeria and not that of any particular political party.
“Having been given Nigerians’ mandate to lead the country, he’s no more of APC alone, but President of all and whatever is due to any state, irrespective of whichever political party governs the state cannot be denied it, because the President-elect is mature and experienced”, he added.
The SDP standard-bearer, who maintained that the glorious era of the old Western Region and which till date remains a reference point was attained without the region belonging to the ruling party at the then Federal level said Oyo State under his administration would attain the best it could be without being run by APC.
He equally asked the incumbent governor and the APC candidate for the Saturday election to bear his father’s name, campaign on what he was able to do in the last almost four years, what he would do differently if by error he’s re-elected and leave the President-elect, who is now the father of the nation out of his campaign.
“The day of reckoning is here and the incumbent governor and all his predecessors who are in the race must be ready to give account of what they had all contributed towards the retarded growth and under-development of the state following which the people of the state are yearning for a new order.
“We are saying it boldly that if they had all justified the confidence our people reposed in them by giving them good governance in return for their votes invested in them, somebody like me has no business coming into politics because of my very tight schedule.
“I’m not a pensioner in politics or a farmer, but, a man in a very thriving business, who found it difficult to look the other way while my people wallow in abject poverty, want and hunger due to lack of enterprising, dogged and visionary leadership and this is why I’m calling on the people of the state to give me a chance to turn the state around for better”, Makinde stated.
