Viral Video: Outrage as Eyo Masquerades Assault Man in Lagos
A wave of public outrage has greeted a viral video capturing the moment a group of Eyo masquerades physically assaulted a man during the ongoing 2025 Eyo Festival in Lagos.
The footage, which surfaced online on Saturday, shows approximately four men clad in the traditional white regalia and red hats repeatedly striking the victim with their staves.
As the man attempted to protect himself, other masquerades were seen rushing to join in the attack while onlookers watched.
The incident has sparked heated debates on social media, with many condemning the violence. While some speculated that the victim might have violated traditional protocols—such as failing to remove footwear or headgear—others argued that the response was disproportionately brutal.
“I no understand this generation of Eyo at all. The Eyo wey I sabi from before no dey mob person like this,” a user identified as Oziegbe Odion wrote on X (formerly Twitter). Another user, #TheMandillas, lamented that “miscreants will use this opportunity to maltreat innocent passersby.”
In a separate video, residents were seen retaliating by throwing chairs and objects at a group of masquerades during a confrontation at a gate, further highlighting the tensions that marred parts of the celebration.
The 2025 Eyo Festival, the first since 2017, was attended by high-profile dignitaries, including President Bola Tinubu and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
However, these violent episodes have raised concerns regarding crowd control and the conduct of participants during the street processions.
As of the time of reporting, festival organizers and security authorities have yet to issue an official statement addressing the specific incidents.
