Village head arraigned for culpable homicide

The village head of Madara community in Kontagora local government Area of Niger State, Malam Mohammed Sani, has been charged before a Senior Magistrate court in Minna the state capital for prosecution over alleged culpable homicide.
According to the Police Information Report{FIR} on the matter which was made available to newsmen in Minna , the 50 -year old village chief was alleged to have sometimes in December last year killed one Abbas Usman who was kept under his care.
He was alleged to have used a hoe-handle to hit the deceased’s head causing serious injuries which led to his death.
The report said the accused person thereafter dumped the deceased’s remains in an abandoned well near his residence.
It was further gathered that the offensive odour from the decomposing corpse of the deceased had attracted residents to the well, where the body was later found.
The village head pleaded guilty, even as he blamed the devil for his action when the case came up for mention at the Senior Magistrate 6 and the charges were read to him.
The offence was said to be contravention to Section 221 of the Penal Code Law of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The prosecuting police officer, Inspector Muazu Abdullahi objected to the bail of the accused person on the grounds that the offence in question was not a bailable offence adding that investigation into the matter was still on going.
The Presiding Magistrate, Hajiya Amina Musa after considering the gravity of the offence committed by the accused, ordered that the accused person to be remanded in prison custody and adjourned the case to March 8 for further mention.
