The Registrar of Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN), Dr. Josiah Kantiyok has warned the 46 newly inducted veterinary doctors against involving themselves in any misconduct stressing that the council will not hesitate to withdraw certificates of anyone found wanting.
Kantiyok said this at University of Nigeria, Nsukka during the 38th oath -taking ceremony; he said the council expected them to be of good conduct so as to contribute to move the profession to the next level.
“Avoid practices of misconduct, explaining that any of the inductees caught in misconduct will have
his or her provisional license withdrawn by the council.
‘’It is this license that gives you the impetus to practice as veterinary doctors, any abuse the
council will be forced to withdraw the license.
“Today you are given veterinary ethics booklet which will guide you as veterinary doctors as you practice’’ he said.
The Vice Chancellor of the University Prof. Benjamin Ozumba who was represented by his deputy on administration, Prof. Charles Igwe in a remark said that oath administered to the inductees requires the veterinary doctors to use the scientific knowledge and skills acquired for the benefit of the society through the prevention of animal disease, relief of animal suffering, improve animal production, promote public health and advance veterinary knowledge.
“Inductees are expected to continue to improve their professional knowledge and competence through regular participation in formal and informal education programmes and conferences.
“My administration commitment to academic and professional excellence in veterinary medicine has remained total and unwavering despite the harsh economic realities of our time”, he said
Also speaking, Dr. Godwin Aboyi, the National President of Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association urged the newly inducted to avoid anything that would bring the image of the profession to disrepute and ensuring that they gave their clients best services.
“Good names pay in this profession, do not allow your client to know that you are only after the money but make him to understand that you have passion for the job.
Earlier in a remark, the dean faculty of veterinary medicine University of Nigeria, Nsukka Prof. Romanus Ezeokonkwo appealed for a befitting faculty building and veterinary teaching hospital building complex, pointing out that the faculty veterinary teaching hospital was nothing to write home about when compared with others.
Prof. Ezeonkonkwo noted that the faculty research and teaching farm is an imagination of a farm, adding that the farm needed to be stocked with livestock, poultry and fish to meet the teaching needs of the students.
“The faculty needs a befitting faculty building as well as veterinary teaching hospital building complex.
“Our vice chancellor, the faculty of veterinary medicine seriously needs to be given a face lift, please consider erecting a befitting faculty building and VTH building for us through future TETFUND intervention,” the dean said.
One of the alumni of the faculty, Dr. Dan Okeke donated 200 chicken birds and N100, 000 for their feeding to the faculty said he did that as a contribution to the faculty that made him what he is today.
He said that what veterinary profession needed to move forward was members acquiring technical skills in various aspect of the profession.
“It is unfortunate that what new vet doctors do as soon as they are inducted to the profession is to rush to open office so as to sell drinkers, feeders and drugs without caring to work with senior colleagues in the profession to gain experience,” he said.
