US Lawmaker Riley Moore Describes New Working Group as “Once-in-a-Lifetime” Chance for Nigeria

US Representative Riley Moore has hailed the establishment of the new US-Nigeria working group as a critical and “once-in-a-lifetime” opportunity to deepen bilateral relations and tackle the pervasive security challenges facing West Africa’s most populous nation.

The lawmaker’s comments followed the conclusion of a two-day high-level engagement between delegations from both countries in Abuja, which was convened to address pressing diplomatic and security concerns.

The working group was formed specifically to address the recent diplomatic friction caused by President Donald Trump’s redesignation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” (CPC) over allegations of religious persecution.

The inaugural meeting, held on Thursday, was led by Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and the US Under-Secretary of State, Allison Hooker.

Moore emphasized that the partnership is a necessary step toward combating terrorism in Northern Nigeria and the Middle Belt, as well as promoting shared values of religious freedom.

In a statement released on Saturday, Moore expressed optimism that the alliance would serve as a stabilizing force in the region.

He noted that the agreement demonstrates that the Nigerian government is taking the situation seriously and acting in good faith to address security conditions.

According to Moore, this cooperation offers a rare chance to not only end the persecution of Christians but also to confront broader economic hurdles that have hindered Nigeria’s development.

The lawmaker commended the Nigerian government for its willingness to partner with the United States, stressing that increased coordination is vital for mutual success.

He argued that beyond security, the working group provides Nigeria with a platform to enhance its capacity as a regional leader, ensuring that it remains a pivotal player in stabilizing the African continent.
