UNN to graduate 132 first class students

…Sultan, Kalu and Ovia bag honourary degrees

A total of 132 of the 7, 830 graduating students of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka will be awarded first class degrees during the 47th convocation of the institution.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Benjamin Ozumba, told newsmen on Monday in Enugu at the Vice- Chancellor’s press briefing marking the flag-off ceremony of the convocation.

Ozumba said that 1, 468 will graduate with postgraduate degrees and diploma while 331 will graduate with doctor of Philosophy and 155 postgraduate diplomas.

He said that institution was determined to continue producing quality graduates that could compete favourably with their counterparts in any part of the world.

The Vice-Chancellor said the university would confer honourary degrees on three Nigerians.
“Three eminent Nigerians who have distinguish themselves in public services will be awarded honourary Doctorate Degrees of our Universities.

“They are His Eminence Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, the Sultan of Sokoto; Chairman of Slok Group, His Excellency, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu and the Chairman, Zenith Bank, Mr. Jim Ovia.

Ozumba said activities lined up during the ceremony was the convocation lecture which will be delivered by the governor of Central Bank, Dr. Godwin Emefiele on Thursday, November 30 at the Princess Alexandra Auditorium, Nsukka campus.

“Conferment of First Degrees, Diplomas and certificates on Friday, December 1.

“Conferment of Postgraduate Diplomas, Higher Degrees, Title of Professor Emeritus on eight renowned professors who have served our institution meritoriously and Award of Honourary Degrees on Saturday”, he said.

The VC said his administration has recorded achievements like the Made-in- UNN laptop, lauch of Roar Nigeria Hub and full-fledged Science Park Project.

“I am glad to announce to you that during our 57th Founders Day celebration, we commissioned a Laptop Assembly Plant in our Nsukka campus.

“University of Nigeria has once again demonstrated its capacity to provide solution to our national question by setting the pace for much coveted knowledge-based economy in Nigeria”, he said.

“We have continued to attract goodwill from our alumni and other well-meaning Nigerians who have made significant donations to improve the state of infrastructure in our campuses”, he said.

He noted that the university was making progress because it has engender trust and mutual respect from all stakeholders.
