UNICAL protest turns bloody

The mass protests embarked upon by various organisations in the University of Calabar, on Monday, turned bloody as protesters and suspected hoodlums supposedly hired by some of the principal officers of the University attacked journalists and passersby.

An eyewitness claimed that a camera belonging to a popular television station was badly damaged in the process, while the camera man, identified as Charles Ekpe was severely battered.

The crisis started when the management of the institution led by a senior management staff name withheld attempted to remove the institution’s bursar, Mr. Peter Agi from office.

A source who pleaded for anonymity told our correspondent that trouble started when the Vice Chancellor, Prof Zana Akpagu, attempted to remove the Bursar, Mr. Agi from office following complaints by some members of the staff over what they described as his ‘high handedness’.
