UNIABUJA Council assures on full accreditation of courses
The University of Abuja’s governing council, on Tuesday in Abuja assured Nigerians that the remaining 3 courses enjoying interim accreditation, out of the 53 course programme run by the university, will receive full accreditation from the National Universities Commission latest may next year, when the next accreditation visits is expected to take place.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Michael Adikwu who gave the assurance while answering questions from newsmen in Abuja, said the accreditation visits by the NUC, usually holds twice yearly, May and November.
Meanwhile, the University of Abuja has commended the management over the successful induction of the first set of medical students of the University after 12 years.
Addressing newsmen in Abuja at the University main campus, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Sani Maikudi said the council is well prepared to render support to the University administration for the consolidation of the gains recorded, not only at the College of Health Sciences but in the entire programmes of the university.
He said the council has every reason to be euphoric about the event of last Saturday seeing it as the beginning of a steady pursuit of scholarship in the four new programmes in the university.
He said: “I will like to specifically commend this crop of men and women, the grandaunts, for their perseverance, commitment and focus which has stood them in good stead as they battled the odds for over 12 years.
We congratulate you and urge you to continue with such strength of character in the years ahead as you render service to humanity wherever you find yourselves’’.
“The council wishes to use this opportunity to pay special tributes to the immediate past and present Provosts and the entire staff of the College of Health Sciences who had to endure the unpleasant moments arising from the outward demonstrations of disappointments by their students following the accreditation status of their programme. Their understanding and perseverance deserves our commendation,” he added.
The council in a similar vein commended the former Vice Chancellor, Professor Nuhu Yaqub whose doggedness resulted in the introduction of the four new programmes in October 2004 and for his appointment of Professor Joseph A. M Otubu to pioneer the commencement of the medical programme in October 2005.
Maikudi further stressed that the university has almost resolve all the issues regarding accreditation. According to him, among the 53 courses run by the University, 50 have been accredited.
