UK Applauds Tinubu’s Economic Reforms, First Lady Hosts British High Commissioner

The United Kingdom has hailed Nigeria’s ongoing economic and trade reforms under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing them as bold, positive, and opening new opportunities for growth.

The commendation came on Monday during a courtesy visit by the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the State House, Abuja.

Montgomery said the UK government was encouraged by the administration’s difficult but necessary reforms and noted their role in strengthening trade partnerships between the two countries.

“We see a lot of positivity in Nigeria’s economy, particularly the opportunities being created by these reforms,” the envoy said.

He also commended the impact of the First Lady’s *Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI)*, describing it as an effective platform for advancing women’s empowerment in education, health, and humanitarian work.

The High Commissioner further highlighted London’s interest in Nigeria’s constitutional amendment process, especially proposals to create special seats for women in the National Assembly.

In her remarks, Senator Tinubu assured the UK delegation of government’s continued commitment to addressing the challenges facing Nigerians through the RHI, which aligns with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

“I believe we can help each other, if we really show concern,” she said, stressing that RHI focuses strongly on empowering women in the informal sector.

Acknowledging concerns about dwindling female representation in the legislature, the First Lady pledged support for efforts to boost women’s numbers in parliament.

“We have to really know the right people to represent us, who can do the work, and that is what we have to enlighten our women about,” she added.

The British delegation also included the Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever.

The meeting comes as Abuja and London look to deepen ties in trade, governance, and social development.
