UI Ranked Nigeria’s Best in Law and Medicine in 2026 Global Ranking

The University of Ibadan (UI) has cemented its reputation as Nigeria’s premier institution for specialized learning, emerging as the country’s top university in both Law and Medicine in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026.

The latest rankings, released on Saturday, highlight UI’s dominance in the highly competitive fields of clinical/health sciences and legal studies, placing it ahead of other prominent Nigerian institutions.

In the clinical and health category, which evaluates excellence in medicine, dentistry, nursing, and other healthcare disciplines, the University of Ibadan secured the top spot among Nigerian contenders, ranking in the 301–400 global band.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) followed in the 401–500 band. Several other institutions, including Ahmadu Bello University, Bayero University Kano, the University of Benin, the University of Jos, and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), were ranked in the 601–800 band.

Further down the list, Babcock University, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), and the University of Ilorin appeared in the 801–1000 band, while Lagos State University (LASU) and the University of Port Harcourt were placed in the 1001+ category.

According to THE, the 2026 medical and health ranking assessed 1,230 universities from 102 countries using 18 rigorous performance indicators calibrated specifically for the field.

Globally, the University of Oxford retained the number one spot for its outstanding teaching, research, and industry links.

In the field of Law, UI shared the spotlight with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). Both institutions were ranked in the 301–400 band, marking Nigeria’s representation among the top 425 law schools globally.

The law ranking evaluated universities based on teaching, research, international outlook, and performance across key legal subjects such as constitutional, criminal, corporate, and international law. Stanford University topped the global list for teaching excellence in law.

This double recognition underscores the University of Ibadan’s continued stride in maintaining high academic standards and global competitiveness in critical professional disciplines.
