Two suspected coup plotters flee Nigeria as military makes more arrests

Two military officers have reportedly fled Nigeria after being accused of involvement in an alleged coup plot to topple the government, TheCable understands.
Security sources said the escape occurred as investigators intensified arrests following the initial detention and interrogation of 16 personnel in the first week of October over the foiled plot.
According to sources, 18 officers were initially marked for arrest, but two evaded capture and are now believed to be outside the country.
Those said to be on the run include Major JM Ganaks (service no. N/14363), from the Federal Capital Territory, who is reportedly stationed at Jaji, Kaduna State. He belongs to the Regular Course 58 of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA).
Also missing is Captain G Binuga (service no. N/167722), a member of Regular Course 64, who was serving at DHQ SOF, Bida, Niger State. He hails from Taraba State.
Investigators are said to be making progress, with sources disclosing that some detained officers have provided “useful statements”, leading to further arrests. A source estimated that more than 30 personnel are now in military custody.
“Some of the arrested officers are keeping mum, but many are said to be ‘very cooperative’,” one insider said.
Sources also dismissed reports that the coup was planned for October 1, noting that arrests only began in the first week of the month.
The military high command has yet to publicly acknowledge a coup plot.
In a recent statement, the Defence Headquarters described the arrests as a routine disciplinary measure, saying the investigation of 16 officers is a “routine internal process aimed at ensuring [that] discipline and professionalism is maintained within the ranks”.
