Trump Says US and NATO Have Framework for Future Greenland Deal

US President Donald Trump says he and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte have “formed the framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland”.

In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump said the agreement followed a “very productive meeting”.

“This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for the United States of America, and all NATO Nations,” the US President said.

Trump did not provide details of the framework but said that, as a result of the negotiations, he would no longer impose tariffs on European allied countries that were due to begin on 1 February.

“Further information will be made available as discussions progress,” he added.

The announcement marks a sharp turn after weeks of controversy over Trump’s repeated efforts to purchase Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, which is a NATO ally. Both Denmark and Greenland have consistently said the island is not for sale.

As tensions have risen, several European NATO countries have increased their military presence in the territory.

The framework agreement also follows a post by Trump a day earlier in which he shared a private exchange with Rutte, who said he was “committed to finding a way forward on Greenland”.

“Can’t wait to see you,” Rutte added in the message.

Trump has ruled out the use of military force to take over Greenland but has said he remains open to negotiations. Previously, he described Denmark as “ungrateful” for refusing to give up the island.
