Trump Announces Venezuela to Transfer Up to 50 Million Barrels of Oil to US
United States President Donald Trump has announced that Venezuela will deliver between 30 and 50 million barrels of oil to the United States, saying the move will benefit people in both countries amid significant political developments in Venezuela.
In a post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump said the oil would be sold at market prices and that he would control the revenue to ensure it is “used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States.”
“I am pleased to announce that the Interim Authorities in Venezuela will be turning over between 30 and 50 MILLION Barrels of High Quality, Sanctioned Oil, to the United States of America,” he wrote. “This Oil will be sold at its Market Price, and that money will be controlled by me, as President of the United States of America, to ensure it is used to benefit the people of Venezuela and the United States!”
Trump added that he had directed Energy Secretary Chris Wright to put the plan into action without delay. “I have asked Energy Secretary Chris Wright to execute this plan, immediately,” he wrote, noting the barrels “will be taken by storage ships, and brought directly to unloading docks in the United States.”
The announcement follows Trump’s earlier declaration that the U.S. would take over aspects of Venezuela’s governance until a political transition is achieved. On January 3, the U.S. captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, bringing him to New York where he faces charges including narco-terrorism.
Trump also claimed the U.S. had “knocked out 97 percent of the drugs coming by sea,” alleging that most of the illicit substances originated from Venezuela.
This development marks a dramatic shift in U.S.–Venezuela relations and raises questions about the future of Venezuela’s oil industry and the legality of the U.S.’s intervention.
