Targeting Sowore’s account assault on free speech, Adeyanju tells DSS

Human rights activist, Deji Adeyanju, has condemned the reported targeting of Omoyele Sowore’s account by the Department of State Services (DSS), describing it as an unacceptable assault on free speech and democracy.

Adeyanju, in a statement on Sunday, said every Nigerian has the right to freely share their opinions, whether or not such views align with those in authority.

According to him, the alleged action of the DSS amounts to state intimidation aimed at silencing dissenting voices.

“The targeting of Omoyele Sowore’s account by the DSS is unacceptable and should be condemned. Every citizen has the right to freely share their opinions, even when those opinions do not align with those in authority. The use of state power to silence and intimidate individuals because of their views is an attack on the very freedoms that sustain a healthy democracy,” he said.

Adeyanju noted that Sowore has consistently been a victim of intolerant governments but has never relented in courageously speaking truth to power. He stressed that such resilience in the face of harassment should be celebrated rather than punished.

“Sowore has remained a victim of intolerant governments, yet he continues to speak his mind courageously,” he stated.

The activist further reminded the DSS and government authorities that Sowore is not only a human rights crusader but also a former presidential candidate whose views on governance carry significant weight.

“He is not just an activist but he is also a former presidential candidate whose commentary on governance carry weight. His criticisms of the president or government policies must be treated with respect, no matter how uncomfortable they may be for those in power,” Adeyanju added.
