Tanker drivers restate commitment to value chain
Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union (PTD) of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) has pledged to sustain the free flow of petroleum products as their commitment to the value chain.
National Chairman, PTD branch, NUPENG, Sulaiman Oladiti fielding questions from journalists in Lagos stressed the role of tanker drivers in the value chain and their commitment to ensuring that the products are not diverted from its primary destination.
“With well over 1000 tankers delivering petroleum products to every part of the country on a daily basis, many still complain of an uneven distribution network as some parts of the country such as the southern and northern parts are prone to short supplies.
“This issue is also attributable to poor road network, non-motorable roads, non-availability of petroleum pipelines, lack of functioning refineries and many others. This has also led to stakeholders calling for a total overhaul of the distribution system, primarily dominated by the use of heavy duty tankers of about 33, 000 litres to convey petroleum products to all parts of the country. This means has also faced huge setbacks as several case of road accidents has led to loss of lives and property worth millions of naira.”
Oladiti urged the government to ensure that better alternative means of distribution was created to mitigate the recorded losses on the highways.
