Super Falcons edge South Africa to reach WAFCON final
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have booked their place in the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) final after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over South Africa on Tuesday, July 22.
The thrilling semi-final clash saw Nigeria take the lead late in the first half when captain Rasheedat Ajibade confidently converted a penalty following a foul in the box. The Banyana Banyana responded early in the second half, with Linda Motlhalo slotting home from the spot to restore parity.
With the game seemingly heading for extra time, the Falcons found their breakthrough in stoppage time. Michelle Alozie produced a stunning moment of brilliance, curling a free-kick into the box that evaded everyone—including the South African goalkeeper—to seal the win for Nigeria.

The victory marks a significant moment for the Super Falcons, who are chasing their 10th WAFCON title. Their win over South Africa is particularly sweet, given the painful loss they suffered against the same opponents in the 2022 tournament.
Head coach Randy Waldrum praised the team’s fighting spirit after the match, saying, “These players showed the heart of champions. We knew South Africa would be tough, but we kept believing, and the result shows what this team is capable of.”
Nigeria will now face hosts Morocco in what promises to be an electric final on Saturday, July 26. The Falcons’ mix of experience and youthful energy led by Ajibade and Alozie has renewed hopes of extending their dominance in African women’s football.
As anticipation builds for the final, fans across Nigeria are rallying behind the team, eager to see the Super Falcons lift yet another continental trophy.
