Suit Seeking Deregistration of ADC, Four Others Begins Feb 16

A suit seeking the deregistration of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and four other political parties will come up for hearing on February 16, 2026, at the Federal High Court, Abuja Division.

The case was filed in December 2025 by the National Forum of Former Legislators, which is urging the court to dissolve the affected parties over their alleged failure to meet constitutional requirements necessary for their continued operation.

The group argued that political parties must satisfy laid down legal thresholds to remain registered and functional within the nation’s democratic space.

It maintained that its action is not targeted at individuals or groups but aimed at strengthening compliance with electoral laws.

According to the forum, the suit is part of efforts to deepen electoral jurisprudence and promote accountability among political actors in Nigeria.

The group noted that enforcing constitutional provisions would enhance public confidence in the country’s electoral system.

It further stated that allowing political parties that allegedly fail to meet constitutional standards to continue operating could undermine democratic principles and weaken political competition.

It is believed the outcome of the case could significantly shape Nigeria’s political environment, especially as the country gradually prepares for future elections.

The judgment may set a precedent regarding compliance requirements for party registration.

The hearing is expected to attract attention from political stakeholders, civil society organisations and legal experts, given its potential implications for the nation’s multi-party democracy.
