Student gets scholarship at Leader Joe Foundation’s junior golf tournament

A ten year old student with special needs Zam Naanmi Claire has bagged a scholarship from primary level to university at the just concluded junior golf tournament organised by the Leader Joe 1808 Foundation.

The third edition of the Leader Joe 1808 Foundation junior golf tournament has wrapped up on sunday 150 participants from different states of the federation and took place at the TYB golf resott in Abuja.

Declaring the scholarship, the Captain TYB Golf Resort Major General S S Jiya said the girl with “Special needs has been awarded the scholarship from primary to university level. Subsequently, he parents and relatives will be met to finalize the details.”

Speaking further, he commended the chief of army staff, Lt Gen OO Oluyede (Grand Patron TYB-IGRCC) for his commitment in driving and supporting the competition over the years.

He said the support of the Chief of army staff has gone a long way in promoting golf in the country.

Speaking at the commencement of the tournament on Saturday, the Founder of the Leader Joe 1808 Foundation, Joseph Onus told journalists that this year’s edition is accompanied with advocacy to return underprivileged children back to school.

“Today at the ceremonial tea off to kickstart the three day event, we have 150 children scattered across states of the federation to compete and most importantly promote the culture of returning children back to school because every child deserves education. Currently, the Fundation has 119 children on scholarship across the country,”

On the impact the tournament has had over the years, he said “This is the third edition and we are happy that from the previous editions, three of the children that played were selected in the world junuor golf ranking,”

On prices to the one, he noted that “Scholarship of N500, 000 will be given to the overall winner while other medals and trophies have been set aside for winnees of different caregories,”

One of the participants, Emmanuella Wesley Oluwaseun said “The tournament is a great idea for children to participate and compete as well as advocate for their contemporaries who are not privileged to go to school,”

Another participant who has played in all the three tournaments, Benedict Barry expressed delight over the uniqueness of this year’s competition includes campaign to return children back to school, adding that “I am glad to be part of the lucky children to play and advocate for less privileged children to have the opportunity to go to school.”
