Strike: FG, ASUU meeting inconclusive – Ogunyemi
The meeting between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) ended without any conclusion on Tuesday.
ASUU National President, Prof. Biodun Ogunyemi, while speaking with newsmen at the end of the closed door meeting in Abuja noted that negotiations were still ongoing. He said both parties were yet to reach a concrete decision.
“For now, we have started to discuss. We are yet to reach any concrete decision. Once we have more information, we will make ourselves available to the press. “The union will reconvene very soon to continue negotiations,” he said.
The meeting held at the instance of the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu was to find lasting solution to the ongoing strike by the university lecturers.
Present at the meeting were the Education Minister, Adamu Adamu; the permanent secretary, Sunny Echono; representative of National Universities Commission (NUC) and representative from the National Income, Wages and Salaries Commission.
Speaking during a briefing earlier, the president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Danielson Akpan, who was present at the meeting, said the two parties need to consider the interest of the students in their deliberations.
“My fear is that these politicians can give a ‘political response’ and may not meet the conditions again,”
Recall that the union embarked on strike on November 4 over the poor funding of Nigerian universities, an alleged plan by the Federal Government to increase students’ fees and introduce an education bank, as well as non-implementation of previous agreements.
