Strange Disease in Ondo, over 14 Dead
The Ondo state government has confirmed the outbreak of a strange disease in Ode Irele, Irele local government area of the state, which has killed over 14 persons in the community.
The Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr. Dayo Adeyanju confirmed the outbreak to journalists on Thursday, at a briefing in Akure, the state capital. Adeyanju said the community outbreak control team informed the Ministry about the outbreak of the epidemic in the community adding that the Ministry has been on top of the situation. He said “Most presentation has to do with headache, loss of sight and after few hours they would die.
He disclosed that a preliminary investigations into the outbreak shows that the strange ailment isn’t “Ebola” as currently being spread in the town as it doesn’t manifest any of its symptoms. He revealed that a delegation comprising officials from the state Ministry of Health and World Health Organization (WHO) had already visited the community for first-hand information.
The commissioner disclosed that those infected by the strange disease have been quarantined at the Ode Irele General hospital to curtail its spread to other community. Adeyanju noted that the investigation to unravel the cause of the epidemic and effective ways of treatment has also begun while the officials have taken samples and sent to Lagos for laboratory analysis.
He cautioned the people of the state against spreading false information, and advised that breaking report on the strange ailment should be immediately notified at the nearest health facilities. “What is important to us is to allay the fear of the people of Ondo state and the country at large and assure them that we are on top of the situation. All cases must be reported so that we can track the spread of the disease. “One thing we have noticed is that the disease has been distributed across the whole place and we cannot trace its source and we have not been able to identify if it had come out of a particular source”, he said.
The Commissioner warned against raising false alarm mostly on the social media on the epidemic “I have no doubt in my mind that within the period of 24 to 48 hours we would have the idea of what we are looking at, we would do our outmost best to ensure this curtail”, he said. The health commissioner also advised people to inform the government on how to properly bury their corpse at this period, which he emphasized, would help contain further spread of the disease.
