Step-mother, sister in court over alleged assault
A step-mother, Victoria Okeke, 40, who allegedly assaulted her step-daughter by beating her up, on Monday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
The accused was arraigned alongside her sister, Oyinyechi Okonkwo, 22, on a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and breach of peace.
The accused both reside at No. 3 Namon Taofeek St., Abule Egba, Ikeja, Lagos.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Michael Unah, told the court that the accused committed the offences on January 22 in their residence.
Unah alleged that the accused pounced on the complainant because she and her twin sister asked for some money to take to their young sister, who was in the hospital.
“The complainant said when she kept asking for money, the duo got angry and pounced on her,” he said.
“The complainant said that ever since their father died, their step-mum had always maltreated them. “She said their father had some properties, but since he died, their step-mum took over everything.
The offences contravened Section 166, 171 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 171 prescribes a three-year jail term for convicted offenders.
The Magistrates, Mrs. A.O Gbajumo, granted the accused bail in the sum of N20, 000 each, with one surety in like sum.
She said that the surety must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned to February 27, for mention.
