‘Sports betting popular among Nigerian youths’

With the economic recession and unemployment biting harder especially among the youth population, it is reported that about eighty percent of Nigerian youths are involved in sport betting.
According to reports, sport betting has contributed a lot to keeping the Nigerian youths busy.
Seeking answers from the youths on why they take to sports betting, a respondent who does not want his name in prints said: “Sports betting has helped me a lot, I have no other way of earning money; this phone I am using, I bought it with the sport betting money.
“With unemployment around the country I gain a lot from this sport betting and I wish to gain more,” he added.
According to Mr Kazeem Oyewole affirmed that these youths who are engaging in sports betting, if elected into a political position in future they will be a big problem to this nation.
Investigation shows that the issue of sports betting in Nigeria has nothing to do with the level of unemployment, because there are instances where you see accountants, bankers, engage in sports betting.
According to an NYSC member, “when I was preparing for my NYSC camping I had no money and no means of getting any, but I decided to engage in sports betting where I later got what I wanted. The money I won was used to get things that I needed,” he stated.
