My Future Is Undecided – Benitez
The Spaniard has again refused to confirm he will stay at Napoli beyond this season
Rafael Benitez says he is undecided over his future at Napoli and will discuss his next move at the end of the season.
The 54-year-old was appointed Walter Mazzarri’s successor in 2013 and enjoyed success in his debut campaign in charge after guiding the club to Coppa Italia glory last May.
Napoli were tipped to challenge for the Serie A iitle this season but have failed to live up to those expectations and sit 15 points adrift of leaders Juventus.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Benitez did little to extinguish rumours that he could quit the club in the summer: “I said in January that I’ll talk [about my future] in April.
“This interview from January repeats the same things. My future is not decided.
“I’ll tell you now, I have had no offers, and I don’t have any particular interests except the game tomorrow.”
Benitez’s men remain in contention for the Europa League and face Dynamo Moscow in the first leg of their last-16 tie on Thursday.
The club go into the game on the back of a 2-2 draw with Napoli, after which president Aurelio De Laurentiis banned him and his players from talking to the media, but the former Liverpool boss insists he is happy to do interviews.
“I’m a professional, and I’ll do an interview if I have to do it, there’s no problem,” he explained.
“I always say that we can go further if we’re united, shoulder-to-shoulder.”
He added: “Although we had played Lazio (in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semi-final four days previously, Inter only spent 19 per cent of the game in our third; [Mariano] Andujar didn’t have to do anything.”
Benitez concluded by saying he is satisfied with the progress of his side this term and pointed out that they could still end the season with yet more silverware.
“I’m happy with how we’re doing on three fronts.
“We’re still playing with great intensity and many have said that against Inter, Napoli gave one of our best performances.
“I want to drive this team forward, one that is joint third in the League, in the Europa League and in the Coppa Italia semi-final.”
