Speaker Abbas denies link to ₦18.6bn NASC building project allegation
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas has dismissed claims that he failed to account for ₦18.6 billion allegedly connected to the National Assembly Service Commission (NASC) headquarters building project.
The allegation, circulated by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), suggested that the Speaker had questions to answer regarding the funding of the project.
But in a statement in Abuja on Monday, the Office of the Speaker described the claim as misleading and baseless.
According to the statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Musa Abdullahi Krishi, the Speaker has no involvement, directly or indirectly in the award, processing, supervision, or payment of contracts in the National Assembly or any of its agencies.
The Office explained that such matters fall strictly under the administrative bureaucracy of the National Assembly, which is responsible for procurement and project execution.
It added that even SERAP acknowledged that the NASC headquarters project was conceived, awarded and executed before the current House leadership assumed office.
The Speaker’s Office said attempts to link him to the project were therefore incorrect and should be disregarded.
The statement urged the media and the public to respect institutional boundaries and avoid attributing administrative decisions to the political leadership of the National Assembly.
