Smoking marijuana increases risk of suffering complications from COVID-19

Doctors have warned that smoking marijuana, the dried flowering tops, leaves, stems, and seeds of the Cannabis sativa (hemp) plant, even just occasionally can increase ones risk of suffering complications from the novel coronavirus COVID-19.

Marijuana called Igbo in Nigeria is a mood-altering drug that affects almost every organ in the body and studies have shown that smoking marijuana could eventually suppress the body’s immune system, making the user more susceptible to certain types of infections.

More so doctors say cannabis leads to inflammation in the lungs, which affects the body’s ability to fight off the coronavirus COVID-19.

Marijuana according to drugabuse.gov ‘irritates the lungs, and people who smoke marijuana frequently can have breathing problems. These problems include daily cough and phlegm, more frequent lung illness, and a higher risk of lung infections.’

Dr Albert Rizzo, chief medical officer for the American Lung Association, speaking with CNN says ‘What happens to your airways when you smoke cannabis is that it causes some degree of inflammation, very similar to bronchitis, very similar to the type of inflammation that cigarette smoking can cause,’ pulmonologist

‘Now you have some airway inflammation and you get an infection on top of it. So, yes, your chance of getting more complications is there.’
