Shots Fired in Milan Courthouse, Killing Judge

A man opened fire in Milan’s courthouse on Thursday, killing a bankruptcy judge and reportedly hitting at least one other person, Italy’s ANSA news agency said.

ANSA quoted the president of the appeals court, Giovanni Canzio, as identifying the slain judge as Fernando Ciampi.

Sky TG24 reported that two people were killed, and that the gunman was barricaded in an upper-floor room.

The building was being evacuated, and women were seen leaving first. Men left later, after having their identification checked.

Police were posted at all exits.

ANSA and other news outlets said the man suspected of the shooting was in the courthouse for a bankruptcy proceeding.

It was unclear how the gunman gained entrance, as visitors to the building have to pass through metal detectors.
