Shettima Tells Opposition Running Against Tinubu in 2027 is Futile

Vice-President, Kashim Shettima, has dismissed the chances of opposition candidates in the 2027 general election, declaring that challenging President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid would be a futile exercise.

Speaking on Friday at the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the All Progressives Congress (APC) held at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja, Shettima asserted that the President’s scorecard and leadership record place him far ahead of potential rivals.

The Vice-President took a swipe at critics who rely on online platforms to gauge political strength, emphasizing that real electoral victories are secured through grassroots coalitions rather than social media engagement.

“Elections are not won by noise or nostalgia. Elections are not conducted on Facebook or Twitter. They are won by coalitions, credibility, and conviction,” Shettima stated.

He expressed supreme confidence in the ruling party’s ability to retain power, citing Tinubu’s political experience as a decisive factor.

“With the experience of our president as our shield and the lessons of the past as our guide, I believe that 2027 is not a gamble; it is a responsibility. And by the fear of God, we shall have a renewable blessing,” he added.

While acknowledging that Nigeria’s democracy allows anyone to contest, Shettima noted that the APC is approaching the next election cycle with “ample confidence,” suggesting that any opposition effort to unseat the current administration would amount to “planning to lose”.

The comments come as political activities gradually build up ahead of the next election cycle, with the ruling party moving to consolidate its hold on power during its NEC meeting.
