No fewer than seven members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) have been confirmed dead, while four others sustained injuries in a lone fatal road accident involving an NUJ bus in Gombe State.
The vehicle, which belongs to the NUJ Gombe State Council, was involved in the crash along the Gombe–Yola highway on Saturday. Photographs circulating online show the bus badly mangled, highlighting the severity of the accident.
The journalists were travelling from Gombe to Yola, Adamawa State, when the incident occurred shortly after their departure from Gombe. They were reportedly returning from a wedding ceremony held in Gombe South Senatorial District.
The victims had attended the wedding of a colleague, an employee of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), before embarking on the journey.
Four other journalists sustained varying degrees of injuries and were rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the crash remains unclear, and authorities are yet to issue an official statement.
The incident has plunged the media community in Gombe State into mourning, with colleagues describing the tragedy as a devastating loss to the profession.
