Serena Williams has admitted she did not know that victory over Sabine Lisicki at the Miami Open was her 700th career triumph.
The 33-year-old booked her spot in the semi-finals of the Masters 1000 event with a hard-fought win over the German.
Having taken the opening set with ease, the American ace lost her way in the second and committed 17 unforced errors as the 2011 Wimbledon finalist levelled affairs.
But the Florida resident rallied in the decider to run out a 7-6 (7/4), 1-6, 6-3 winner in Key Biscayne.
In doing so, the 19-time Grand Slam winner brought up her 700th singles victory in an illustrious career but confessed to being oblivious to the milestone.
“I had no idea,” she said. “I saw them bringing out a cake and I thought, ‘Whose birthday is it today?’ But I really had no idea about it, so I’m really excited right now.”
Meanwhile last year’s French Open finalist Simona Halep beat rising US star Sloane Stephens 6-1, 7-5 in an hour and 15 minutes to set up a last-four encounter with Williams.
