Security guard gets COVID-19 after watching over quarantine hotel

A security guard for one of the hotels used to quarantine returned overseas travelers in Perth has contracted COVID-19.

The 47-year-old, contracted by the Health Department, was working at the Pan Pacific in the western capital, where a number of people were sequestered after coming back to Australia.

The man had several shifts at that hotel and other locations.

The Health Department has said the role was static in nature and the man had limited access to other areas of the hotel.

The job supposedly had minimal contact with hotel employees and guests.

There are concerns it was from contact with people at the hotel.

“What it shows is that it’s extremely contagious and you never know where there is going to be someone acquire the illness,” Premier Mark McGowan said.

The 209 people on Rottnest Island, meanwhile, will celebrate an end to their 14-day quarantine tomorrow after testing negative for coronavirus in daily checks.

But Rottnest will remain a quarantine island once the travelers leave, in case of new clusters.
