SAVY: A new era of afrobeat

The genre Afrobeat became familiar to Nigerians as it dates back to the early 1920’s.

FELA KUTI; The man that started it all, created this sound experimenting with different elements of jazz, highlife, traditional Yoruba music and percussion rhythms formulating a sound that took Africa by a storm. The rest of the world has now caught up with AFROBEAT as it exudes a vibe that people all over the world, African or not, are just simply drawn to. Thanks to Global Nigerian Artists such as DAVIDO, WIZKID, TIWA SAVAGE, BURNA BOY and many more, AFROBEAT continues to successfully make its way to mainstream platforms. Nigerians in the diaspora have now decided to create a bridge that ties their roots and the North American Culture they reside in to create a new genre; AFRO-POP/AFRO-RNB. Samuel David AKA SAVY is one of them.

The summer of 2020, SAVY teamed up with MAGNITO, MADZ and MIK-O to create the hit song “JANET”. The AFROPOP star born and raised in Nigeria, now residing in Canada proved to his city that he is truly destined to be one of the talents that keeps the AfroPop’s torch burning for years to come. Shortly after, SAVY, CARAMEL and Majesty Lyn dropped another hit `My Baby Remix” which included a quality visual that was directed by Savy himself. Savy’s hard work and dedication brought his dreams to fruition as he not only started assembling a fanbase in Canada, but started being recognized by artists like MrEAzy, TENI, FALZ and many more.

Nonetheless, SAVY did not let that slow him down as his single ‘Love Ting’ landed in #12 in the ITUNES chart surpassing many of the artists he himself looks up to.

Regardless of the major success he has acquired, SAVY remains focused on his dreams and inspiring people to pursue what they love to do, despite any challenges that may come along.

“The biggest thing I had to overcome was my fear of failure, because once you BELIEVE in yourself and your art, I guarantee you no one can stop you.”
