A woman who fled a quarantine for possible exposure to the coronavirus spreading globally needs to immediately return to the hospital in St Petersburg, a Russian health official said on Thursday.

“The 32-year-old woman, who has not been diagnosed with the virus, was quarantined after coming back from a trip to China with flu symptoms.

“The woman fled the Botkin Hospital ward by short-circuiting an electronic lock,’’ state news agency TASS reported.

According to comments carried by the Moscow Times newspaper, which also covers St Petersburg, Russia’s second-largest city, she complained of dismal conditions in the ward.

St Petersburg’s chief health official is seeking a court order for the woman to be detained and brought back to the facility.

Russia has only had two reported cases of the new coronavirus, two Chinese nationals in Siberia who have recovered.
