Rotary International continues ‘end polio now’ project in Abia

Rotary Club of Umuahia North, Zone 5, District 9142 has continued its ‘End Polio Project’ of Rotary International in Umuahia Abia state.

The ceremony took place Wednesday at Plaza Hotel with Rotary prayer kicked off by the Club President, Rotn. Chukwudi Ibegbulam, while the Assistant Governor Zone 5, Rotn. Chimdi Oluoha made his opening speech as the special guest of the day.

The guest lecturer, also Assistant Governor Zone 5, came with a Rotary box for Rotary club of Umuahia North, to help in raising fund for the End Polio Project.

In his lecture, Rotarian Chimdi urged Rotarians to continue in their doggedness to ensure that Polio is completely eradicated in Abia state and Nigeria at large, as Rotary international is very close to eradicating polio in Nigeria, about 95% successful in the zealous quest to End Polio, Rotn. Chimdi said.

Rotary International launched its polio immunization programme, PolioPlus in 1985, and became a spearheading partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI),

along with the World Health Organization (UNICEF), and the U.S Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (Bill Gate and wife foundation) later joined the initiative.

In the year when the GPEI was launched, there were 350,000 cases of polio in 125 countries, but now many of those countries have no case of polio. Eradicating the disease, Polio, is obviously Rotary’s top priority.

Two new members equally joined Rotary club of Umuahia North, same day, November 7, as they, Rotn. Smath Iwunze and Rotarian Vincent Nkeakamakolam, were inducted by the Assistant Governor zone 4, District 9142.
