House of Representatives Committee on Healthcare Services has endorsed the inclusion of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in constituency projects.

Chairman of the Committee, Hon (Dr)Tanko Sununu made this known on Wednesday, when the Executive Secretary of the NHIS, Professor Muhammad Sambo appeared before the committee for the 2022 budget defence session.

Sununu, stated that this will ensure people at the grassroots, benefit from the scheme, regardless of their status.

He explained that the measure would also, enable the lawmakers to choose, particular group of individuals or group that would benefit.

“The reason why we endorsed it is that, a lawmaker would now have the right to go to NHIS to ask why his people are dissatisfied with services of the scheme.

“It will be tracked along the line and the area of dissatisfaction would be detected withe neccessary corrections.”

Dr Sununu, urged lawmakers to embrace the humanitarian service to their constituencies.

The Executive Secretary of the NHIS Professor Muhammad Sambo, explained that a lawmaker can sponsor one thousand people for one year at the cost of ten, (10) million naira or fifteen, (15) million naira for two years.

Sambo stated that the organisation developed a platform called, Group individual and family social insurance program (GIFSIP).

He further explained that it is a platform that would bring individuals, families and groups to pay premium on behalf of people in their communities.

He said: “The constituency health project is tagged along GIFSIP, where lawmakers can put some funds in the NHIS to cover the people in their constituencies.”

The Executive Secretary urged wealthy individuals to invest in the initiative to assist the less privileged, attain universal health coverage in line with President Muhammadu Buhari’s next level agenda.
