Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra state has been lauded by the state chapter of Nigeria Red Cross Society for providing security in the state thus guaranteeing the security of lives and properties of the people.
The state chairman of the Red Cross and also a former Chief Judge of the state, Justice P. A. C. Obidigwe, said the provision of security in the state and other infrastructural facilities have helped to reduce disasters, which would have tasked the ability of the society.
Justice Obidigwe, who spoke in his address during the 2017 World Red Cross Day celebration in Awka, said that Governor Obiano had equally done a lot to improve the health system in the state.
“State public hospitals and health centres in Anambra state have been appropriately considered with governance financing, infrastructural installations, appurtenances, staffing and disaster emergency situation of any sort have been expanded and enhaced with the available human and material resources.
He has embarked on more road construction and flyovers and agricultural produce,” said Justice Obidigwe.
He requested public spirited and individuals and organizations to sponsor or support the society to enable it perform its functions vigorously and enable it to actively respond to emergency situations.
The chairman listed some of their needs to include six ambulances, four Pick–up vans, 1,000 first aid boxes, 10 bales of blanket, 1,000 plastic cups and plates each, 1000 spoons, and 500 stretchers.
He said these would enhance the capacity on disaster preparedness, Mitigation and rapid response to the most venerable in times of human needs and drug worth N4.5 million.
Speaking on this year’s theme, which is ‘Together for Humanity,’ Justice Obidigwe said it was to strategically appraise and evaluate the vantage roles of the society, stressing that volunteers and massive Red Cross membership underpines the activities of the society.
The chairman said that this year’s theme was in recognition and honour of the teeming volunteers of Red Cross Society all over the 187 member nations with more than 250 million supporters.
He said “at the same time, Red Cross is focusing and highlighting on concerted efforts of humanitarians all over the world. It is basically to draw the attention of the world leaders and latent global organizations on the pertinent need to embark on rapid response to disaster emergencies and funding of humanitarian operations.
It is very imperative to create enabling environment in order to achieve global security and safety which is central to world economic and social order and major pivots to global growth in all facets of human endeavour.
In his speech the vice-chairman, Anambra state Red cross Society, Prof. Emeka Katchy, commended those who attended the occasion, assuring that the society was committed to rapid response to disasters and emergencies.
He urged public spirited individuals and organizations to support Red cross to enable it perform satisfactorily its statutory functions such as communal conflicts, internal displacement, herdsmen invasion, kidnap trauma among others.
