Prosecution of Arrested Gay Suspects Stalled As Cases of Covid-19 Rise

The Edo State Command of the Nigerian Police has said that the planned prosecution of the over 67 arrested gay suspects at a gay-party recently in Benin City would be suspended owing to health concerns around the menace of Covid-19 outbreak .

This was contained in a statement made available to journalists in Benin City by the Edo State Command of the Nigerian Police.

Recall that gay suspects numbering 67 were arrested on November 11th 2019 at a gay party in a remote hotel where incriminating evidence was recovered from the suspects .

The statement further stated that 2 notorious members of the suspects namely Owegbe Lucky and Osas Blessed were reportedly caught in the act of same-sex practice behind a building during the raid of the gay suspects by the operatives of the Nigerian Police while others were reportedly arrested at different spots in the hotel in possession of hard alcoholic drinks with different sex toys.

According to the Police Public Relation Office of the Edo State Command of the Nigerian Police, the planned prosecution of the 67 arrested gay suspects had to be called off in view of the public safety and health concerns arising from the rising cases of the Covid-19 in the nation.

It however added that all the arrested gay suspects were remanded at Oko correctional facility in Benin City under strict health guidelines and regulations to check the spread of Covid-19 among inmates adding that all court cases and proceedings in the state have been halted momentarily in view of the recent Covid-19 outbreak.

Homosexuality remains illegal in Nigeria and is generally not accepted as the country’s Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Act restricts both same-sex relationships and public affection, with punishments of up to 14 years in prison.
