Police Repel Late-Night Bandit Attack at Kebbi Border
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force successfully repelled a coordinated attack by suspected bandits along the Maje border road in Kebbi State on Friday night.
The confrontation occurred at approximately 9:45 p.m. on February 20, 2026. Authorities report that the armed men, believed to be affiliated with the notorious Lakurawa criminal network, attempted to breach security positions under the cover of darkness.
In a tactical maneuver to conceal their advancement, the attackers reportedly moved a herd of cattle ahead of them. However, officers from the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU) remained on high alert and engaged the bandits in a fierce gun duel. The superior firepower of the police forced the criminals to retreat into the surrounding bush.
Kebbi State Police Commissioner, Umar Mohammed Hadeija, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Saturday. He praised the professionalism of the operatives, noting that their swift response prevented any loss of life.
“Our operatives were vigilant and professionally responded to the attack. The bandits were repelled and forced to flee. Although some temporary security structures were damaged, no lives were lost and no injuries were recorded,” Hadeija stated.
In response to the attempted breach, the Commissioner announced that additional security reinforcements have been deployed to the border corridor to prevent further incursions.
He also issued a stern warning to herders and livestock owners, banning night grazing and the movement of cattle under conditions that could provide cover for criminal activities.
“We urge herders and livestock owners to desist from night grazing or movement of cattle in a manner that creates suspicion. Security agencies will take firm and lawful action against any unlawful activity linked to such practices,” the Commissioner added.
The Kebbi State Police Command has assured residents that the situation is currently calm and fully under control, urging the public to continue their daily activities while security agencies intensify patrols along vulnerable routes.
