Police debunk video of attack on INEC chairman’s house in Bauchi

Bauchi State Police Command has announced that a video clip showing that the house of Independent National Electoral Commission’s Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, was attacked by hoodlums in Bauchi, is fake.

This was contained in a press release issued to newsmen by the Bauchi State Police Command with a title: “Hoodlums did not attach residence of INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu in Bauchi state”.

Signed by the Police Public Relations Officer PPRO of the Command, SP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil yesterday, the press release clarified that the claim in the video clip was fake.

“The attention of the Bauchi State Police Command has been drawn to a viral video making the rounds in the media that the Bauchi residence of Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), was attacked by hoodlums, on Saturday,” the release said.

“We categorically wish to state that the video and its content is entirely fake, as no such event occurred within or around Bauchi metropolis, earlier today,” SP Wakil further clarified.

According to SP Wakil, his principal, CP Aminu Alhassan who is mindful of the negative impact of disinformation on public peace and security, particularly during post-election period, has ordered for discreet investigation to unravel the origin of the video with a view to ensuring that the fabricator of the viral clip face the full wrath of the law.

He stressed that “the Bauchi State Police Command reiterates that there was no attack of any nature on the residence of the INEC Chairman in Bauchi.”

The PPRO while calling on the general public not to panic, also urged them to disregard the fake video and its malicious content.
